Digital baby scales are becoming more popular as parents become more interested in keeping an eye on their baby’s growth.
Watching your child grow is an exciting journey for all parents. Recording the dates they lose their first teeth, or say their first words is common practice for many parents. Tracking their baby’s weight with a baby weight scale is something a little bit extra that many parents are choosing to do. It is quite amazing watching their weight bursts throughout their first years on earth!
Why use a baby weight scale? The various uses for baby weight scales include:
- Checking the infants weight gain during its growth phases
- Ensuring that your child is consuming enough milk
- Recording the birth weigh, or it’s weigh at certain key dates (birthdays, months etc)
You can save money. Visiting a doctor to weigh your baby can cost anything from $30 to over $75. Many parents worry about their infants weight, and will ask their doctor to weigh their child multiple times throughout its early years. Most parents are not aware that buying a baby weight scale only costs $30 – $50, so if you plan on having your baby weighed more than twice, it is more cost effective to do it in your own home!
You will stop stressing. Many parents worry over their child’s weight. Is he or she to light,or too heavy? Is your child normal? Owning a baby weight scale can provide peace of mind. You will be able to weigh your baby any day you chose, and compare their weight to free online charts. This will take a little bit of stress of ouf the already stressful parenting process!
I’ve taken a look at the best baby scales on the market, and picked out a few of the best infant scales available. If you want a baby weight scale, then these are the ones you should be considering!
The Salter 914 is such a great baby weighting scale for a number of reasons. It is perfect for both babies and toddlers, meaning you can use this scale for a much longer time. It simply converts from a baby scale to a toddler scale by removing the tray!
The Hold function is worth its weight in gold. You know how when you stand on a bathroom scale you know to stay completely still, or the scale fluctuates? Well babies don’t know this! The hold function on this baby weighing scale will keep the weight on the display, even when the baby is wriggling around. Perfect!
Another feature that is absolutely priceless is the Zero function. Because infants and babies are so light, the weight of their diapers or clothing can effect the results quiet significantly. One way around this is measuring them right after bathing, when they are still naked. However if you want to measure them any other time, you can use the Zero function to subtract the weight of any diapers of clothes the baby may be wearing.
The accuracy of this particular baby weighing machine is more then enough. The Salter 914 baby weight scale can measure up to 45 pounds in 0.5 ounce increments.
This may sound a little weird, but this is also a great cat scale. Yes, people are using this scale to weigh cats! When researching this product I came across many discussions from people wanting a cat scale, and the Salter 914 was one of the most frequently mentioned scales. People found this to be the best scale for cats because it registers the weight quickly, and the aforementioned ‘hold’ function means a restless cat doesn’t make getting an accurate weight a headache.
WHAT WE LOVE:
- The large 1.2 inch LCD screen clearly shows the results. This helps ensure you are accurately recording them.
- It is a battery operated baby scale, which is great as you can quickly and easily relocate it to wherever the baby may be without worrying about finding a nearby power plug.
- This baby scale can switch from pounds to kilograms with a simple push of a button.
- The Salter 914 is one of the most well built baby weight scales we have reviewed.
- Thanks to being a reasonably cheap baby weight scale, this particular product makes a great gift at baby showers. Not many people think about giving a baby weight scale as a gift, but it is a nice change and most expecting parents really appreciate it!
- When the baby can stand on its own, simply remove the tray, and it becomes a fully functioning toddler weight scale.
The warranty on this model is an incredible five years, so pop out a few babies and use it for all of them! As with most digital baby scales, the warranty only applied if the defect happens due to manufacturing errors. You can’t drop the scale, or have your toddler jump on it, and expect a refund.
There are over 500 positive reviews of the Salter 914 available to read online from dozens of retails. We reckon we have read a good few hundred of them, and they are overwhelmingly positive. After borrowing a Salter 914 from a friend, we are confident that this is one of the best infant weighing scales, that you just so happen to be able to use as a toddler scale.

The HOMEIMAGE digital baby scale is a solid product with over 200 customer reviews averaging a 4.5 star rating. It has the essential features covered off in the other reviews on this page, with the main one being the Hold Function which allows you to freeze the weight reading even when the baby is moving about.
This scale is well built, and light and durable. It can weigh up to 44 pounds in 0.5 ounce increments. The weight reading will appear on the large LCD screen which is super easy to read.
The curved design of this baby scale makes it easy to use. Place your child in the middle of the scale, and its ready to go. As with other baby weight scales, this model also makes a great pet scale. It is often also used to weigh cats.
In terms of baby weight scales, this one is a little more expensive than others available on the market. But it is a great scale which will last for years. If you plan on using the baby weight scale for multiple children, then you will definitely get your moneys worth.
The only negative I can find with this scale is it has just a one year warranty on it, which is significantly less than the five year warranty offered by Salter on their scale above.

Baby Weight Tips, Facts, and Figures.
We have picked up a few tips and tricks to accurately weigh babies and toddlers over the years. Here are a few of the best, plus some other ramblings that we think you might find helpful!
Using a Bathroom Scale
If you don’t have a baby weight scale, or are waiting on your baby weight scale to arrive, you can still work out the weight of your baby (assuming you have a standard bathroom scale). You can do this by standing on the scale yourself, and noting your own weight. Then go and pick up your little friend, and stand on the scale again. Note down the combined weight of both yourself and the baby. Now subtract the second weight, from the first weight, and you have the weight of your baby.
YOUR COMBINED WEIGHT – YOUR WEIGHT = BABIES WEIGHT
Easy as that! If your not good at maths (like me!) pull out your phone, as most have calculators built into them these days. The only issue with this method is that some scales made for adults are not as accurate or precise as the scales for babies we have reviewed above. The best baby weight scale are accurate to within 0.5 ounce, which is important since they are such little light creatures when they are so young. For this reason, we recommend using this standard bathroom scale method only temporarily, while you are waiting for your baby weight scale to arrive.
Don’t be tempted to place you child directly on the bathroom scale, as the wriggling, and your hands holding him or her, will give you inaccurate results. The best baby scales come with a nice cradle so the baby can be weighed without being touched.
Keeping the baby happy
A small tip…but a goodie. As you would have seen most infant scales are plastic. They can get a little cold during the winter months, which no baby or adult would want to lay on. Use a soft blanket, and drape it over the plastic cradle, then use the button on the scale to calibrate it to zero. Once it is at zero ounces, with the blanket on top, then you can place the baby into the cradle. This will ensure you get an accurate reading, and it avoids placing the baby in direct contact with the cold plastic. If you live in a warmer climate than I do, you can ignore this advice!
Keep a baby weight chart
We recommend keeping a baby weight chart so you can monitor how your babies weight changes over time. We have provided a sample one below, but you may find other free baby weight charts online from other websites. If you decide to use our chart, or share it with your friends on social media such as Pinterst, please be sure to link back to BodyFatShop.com.Thanks!
